International Day of the Girl Child Celebration

University of Kabianga celebrated the Day of the Girl Child through a workshop organized by the Directorate of Gender together with UoK Gender club where both UoK female and male students and students from neighboring high schools came together to discuss the importance of female empowerment and shone a light on difficult topics that impede progress towards realizing this goal. International Day of the Girl Child is an annual and internationally recognized observance on October 11 that empowers girls and amplifies their voices.

In a display of sisterhood and intergenerational knowledge sharing, presenters at the special occasion were drawn from across the university with Dr. Cecilia Sang (Registrar Academics), Dr. Ronald Rop (Director Quality Assurance), Dr. Tom Juma Otieno (HOD Humanities), and Dr. Faith Onyangore (HOD Public Health) among other presenters sharing pearls of wisdom and encouragement.  Held under the theme “Our Rights, Our Future, Educate the Girl Child”, presentations focused on the following topics:

  • Education and Career opportunities
  • Advancing sexual and Reproductive health
  • The role of men in advancing the women and Girl agenda
  • Children and Human Rights
  • Adolescent and Leadership

The directorate of Gender under the leadership of Dr. Phanice Wangila made a donation of sanitary pads and stationary to the visiting high school students.
