International Women's Day Celebration, 2022

March 8 marks International Women’s Day – a global celebration dedicated to uplifting women and honoring their achievements, and the University of Kabianga Directorate of Gender and Development organized a series of events to celebrate the day.

The events included: marching across the University, planting of trees, speeches, entertainment and recognition of women who have made an impact in the University.

The speakers of the day were Prof. Eric Koech (DVC A&F) and Md. Florence Machio (guest speaker). In attendance were representatives from Uniliver, Transformers Kenya, staff and students.

Prof. Koech pointed out that to stop the bias in women we need to:  have gender policies in place, have drastic mitigations processes of issues from the lowest level possible, have programmes with gender contextualize content among other things.

In her speech Md Florence said “This year’s theme is #BreakTheBias. Unfortunately, bias and stereotypes continue to hold women back in many places. She thus asked women to be on the fore front in breaking all the bias in the very little things they do.

“Under pressure women have produced solutions to many problems but these solutions have to be supported to produce the change that is required.”

To end the day, two women Ms. Everline Rop (staff) and Sharon Nakulo (student) were recognized for their exemplary character. Ms. Everline Rop, a Janitor in the hostels department was recognized for her dedication at work. Sharon Nakulo, a student from Turkana County has risen above many odds. Coming from a culture where girls are married at an early age, she withstood all that and was able to work hard and secure a place in the University of Kabianga to pursue Clinical Medicine in the School of Health Sciences. Sharon has been in the ' forefront in advocating for rights of young girls and women from marginalized areas. She has assumed responsibility of parental care by educating her siblings though the HELB loan she receives and has even brought her young sister to stay with her so as to educate her.
